Parent & Child Learn-to-Swim - 111201

Parent and Child - Learn how to safely work with your child in the water, including how to appropriately support and hold your child in the water and how to prepare and encourage your child to participate fully and try the skills. In addition, you are introduced to several water safety topics. Your child receives an introduction to basic skills that lay a foundation for learning to swim.

Level 1 Learn-to-Swim - 121201

Level 1 - Introduction to basic skills as the foundation for future skills and the development of water competency (the basic minimum skills needed for water safety). It is common for children to participate in several sessions of Level 1 before they successfully demonstrate each skill.
Milestones:
o Entering the water independently using the ramp, steps or side.
o Traveling at least 5 yards, bobbing 5 times and then safely exiting the water.
o Opening eyes underwater and retrieving submerged object.
o Gliding on front with assistance at least 2 body lengths.
o Rolling to a back float for 5 seconds with assistance.
o Recovering to a vertical position with assistance.
o Combined arm and leg actions on front and back with assistance.
o Alternating and simultaneous arm and leg actions on front and back with assistance.

Level 2 Learn-to-Swim - 121202

Level 2 - Begin to perform skills at a slightly more advanced level than level 1 and begin gaining rudimentary propulsive skills on both the front and the back. This level marks the beginning of independent aquatic locomotion skills.
Milestones:
o Stepping from the side into chest-deep water.
o Fully submerging and holding breath.
o Pushing off the bottom, moving into a treading or floating position for at least 15 seconds, swimming on front and/ or back for 5 body lengths and then exiting the water.
o Moving into a back float for 15 seconds, rolling to front and then recovering to a vertical position.
o Pushing off and swimming using combined arm and leg actions on front for 5 body lengths, rolling to back, floating for 15 seconds, rolling to the front and then continue swimming for 5 body lengths.

Level 3 Learn-to-Swim - 121203

Level 3 - Learn to swim the front crawl and elementary backstroke at rudimentary levels, introduction to the scissors and dolphin kicks, learn the survival float and increases the time duration for treading water, learn the rules for headfirst entries and begin to learn to enter the water headfirst from a seated position at poolside (if the water is 9 feet deep or deeper).
Milestones:
o Flutter, scissors, breaststroke and dolphin kicks.
o Jumping into deep water from the side, recovering to the surface, maintaining position by treading or floating for 1 minute, rotating a full turn and then turning as necessary to orient to the exit point.
o Swimming the front crawl and/or elementary backstroke for 25 yards and then exiting the water.
o Pushing off in a streamlined position, swimming the front crawl for 15 yards, changing position and direction, swimming the elementary backstroke for 15 yards and then exiting the water.

Level 4 - Improving the swimming stroke proficiency and swimming for longer distances.
Milestones:
o Swimming the front crawl for 25 yards.
o Swimming the elementary backstroke for 25 yards.
o Swimming the breaststroke for 15 yards.
o Swimming the butterfly for 15 yards.
o Swimming the back crawl for 15 yards.
o Swimming the sidestroke for 15 yards.

Lifeguard Training - 161200

You must be at least 15 years of age or older in order to participate in the Lifeguard Training class and must be able to pass the swimming prerequisite.

The swimming prerequisite will take place on the first day of class and consist of:
*A 300-yard continuous swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed.
*Tread water for 2 minutes without support and without stopping. When treading, only the legs can be used. You should place your hands under your armpits. The head must remain above the surface of the water.
*Within 1 minute and 40 seconds:
*Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Your face may be in or out of the water.
*Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
*Return to the surface and swim 20 yards to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so you are able to get a breath. Do not swim the distance under water.
*Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Junior Lifeguarding - 161201

MANDATORY PRECOURSE SESSION ON FRIDAY, JULY 7TH FROM 11:00AM - 12:00PM
The precourse session is required for all participants to ensure their safety and the safety of other in the class. Participants who are unable to complete to precourse session will not be allowed to continue in the course and will receive a full refund. The precourse session consists of:
• Swimming front crawl for 25 yards continuously, breathing to the front or side
• Swimming breaststroke for 25 yards continuously using the pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence
• Treading water for 1 minute using their arms and legs
• Showing a level of comfort on the back by floating on the back for 30 seconds or swimming on the back for 25 yards using the elementary backstroke or back crawl
• Submerging feet-first or head-first and swimming underwater a distance of 10 feet
